Thailand continues to strengthen its reputation as one of Southeast Asia’s leading digital payment destinations by expanding its QR payment system for international travelers.
Already recognized for having one of the region’s most advanced QR payment networks, the country has introduced a more seamless way for tourists to pay at local businesses using QR codes linked directly to their home-country banking applications and digital wallets.
The initiative is part of Thailand’s broader strategy to accelerate its transition toward a cashless and digitally connected economy.
By allowing visitors to make payments directly from their own financial accounts, the system removes many of the common inconveniences associated with international travel, such as carrying large amounts of cash, exchanging foreign currency, or paying high international transaction fees.
For tourists, Thai QR Payments offer a faster and more convenient alternative to traditional payment methods.
Instead of relying solely on cash or credit cards, travelers can simply scan a merchant’s QR code using their supported mobile banking application or digital wallet.
In most cases, payments are processed instantly, with competitive exchange rates and minimal or even no additional transaction fees, depending on the participating payment provider.
Central Bank and Institutional Support
The payment method expansion was initiated by the Bank of Thailand (BoT) and supported by eight major financial institutions, alongside international payment providers.
Among the participating banks are Krung Thai Bank, Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn Bank, Siam Commercial Bank (SCB), Bank of Ayudhya (Krungsri), ICBC (Thai), the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC), and CIMB Thai Bank.
The project also includes partnerships with globally recognized Chinese digital payment providers such as Alipay, WeChat Pay, and UnionPay.
This partnership reflects the strong bilateral tourism ties between Thailand and China, with travel between the two countries reaching approximately 8.8 million visitors in 2024.
This was made possible as the Bank of Thailand (BoT) recognizes that implementing cross-border real-time payments not only improve convenience for travelers but also create new opportunities for businesses engaged in tourism and international trade.
Enabling secure, efficient, and cost-effective transactions through standardized QR code payments supports both economic growth and financial innovation.
Convenience in Every Payment
Using Thai QR Payments is designed to be simple and user-friendly. At participating stores, customers only need to locate the merchant’s QR code, which is typically displayed near the checkout counter or payment terminal.
After scanning the code with a compatible banking app or digital wallet, users review the payment details, approve the transaction, and the funds are transferred to the merchant in real time.
The expanded service is supported by National ITMX, Thailand’s core electronic payment infrastructure, enabling seamless cross-border payments.
This technology enables visitors from participating countries to pay directly from their home-country financial accounts without the need to open a local bank account or obtain a Thai payment card.
Solidfying Thailand’s Position
With these upgrades, Thailand strengthens its position as a frontrunner in Southeast Asia’s digital payments landscape.
Additionally, the Bank of Thailand (BoT) is reportedly progressing its plan to introduce a baht pegged stablecoin by the end of 2026, aimed to support the digital finance.
The central bank plans to allow financial institutions to use stablecoins for settlement purposes only. If the first phase succeeds, additional use for the stablecoins will be assessed.
These initiatives aim to make digital payments faster, easier, and more accessible, especially for cross-border transactions to and from Thailand.
The expanded QR system not only enhances the overall tourist experience but also represents a major step in building the country’s digital tourism infrastructure. Ultimately, it reinforces Thailand’s ambition to lead the region and potentially the world in cashless tourism innovation.
