KuCoin Nigeria Limited has received conditional Approval-in-Principle (AIP) from the Securities and Exchange Commission, Nigeria (SEC Nigeria), for admission into its Accelerated Regulatory Incubation Programme (ARIP).
The development marks an important step in the company’s efforts to align its proposed operations with Nigeria’s regulatory framework and strengthen its commitment to compliance.
As part of the review process, KuCoin Nigeria presented its proposed platform and business operations to SEC Nigeria.
The presentation covered customer onboarding, fiat deposit and withdrawal arrangements, technology infrastructure, governance, and risk management procedures.
These preparations demonstrate the company’s focus on establishing appropriate operational standards and protecting users,
However, the conditional approval does not represent a final license, registration, endorsement, or recommendation by SEC Nigeria. It also does not permit KuCoin Nigeria to begin operations, onboard customers, or offer services to the Nigerian public.
The company must satisfy all applicable pre-commencement conditions and obtain any further written clearance required by the regulator.
Building Trust Through Compliance and Regulatory Engagement
Nigeria remains an important market for digital assets, supported by a growing digital economy and increasing interest in financial innovation.
KuCoin believes that cooperation between industry participants and regulators is essential to developing a sustainable digital asset market built on transparency, accountability, and user protection.
The company’s regulatory engagement in Nigeria also reflects its broader global compliance strategy.
In Europe, KuCoin EU has received authorization under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCAR), while its Australian operations are conducted through Axis One Markets Pty Ltd, which is registered with AUSTRAC as a digital currency exchange provider.
These regulatory statuses apply only to the relevant entities and activities within their respective jurisdictions. They do not grant KuCoin Nigeria permission to provide services in Nigeria.
KuCoin CEO BC Wong said: “Receiving conditional Approval-in-Principle from SEC Nigeria marks another important milestone in KuCoin’s global compliance journey. As digital assets become an increasingly important part of the global financial system, trust must be built through continuously strengthening governance, maintaining high compliance standards and enhancing user protection. We value the opportunity to engage constructively with SEC Nigeria through ARIP and to continue building in line with Nigeria’s evolving regulatory framework. Our focus remains on strong governance, high compliance standards and meaningful user protection as we support the responsible and sustainable development of the digital asset ecosystem.”
What Comes Next for KuCoin Nigeria?
Following this development, KuCoin says it will continue strengthening its governance, compliance systems, operational resilience, and user protection measures while engaging with regulators and industry stakeholders.
Before receiving the necessary clearances, KuCoin Nigeria will not launch public-facing services, enable trading, process fiat transactions, hold customer assets, or onboard clients.
Its proposed products, digital assets, custody arrangements, and payment services remain subject to further regulatory review where required.
Founded in 2017, KuCoin serves users across more than 200 countries and regions. The company says its long-term goal is to support a more transparent and trusted digital asset industry.
Nevertheless, admission into ARIP does not guarantee formal registration, and KuCoin Nigeria must meet all applicable regulatory requirements before it can begin operating in the country.
