Germany’s largest bank is moving closer to bringing regulated crypto custody to institutional investors.

Deutsche Bank is preparing to launch a digital asset custody service for institutional and corporate clients across Europe, subject to regulatory approval.

The bank expects to begin onboarding its first clients this year once the applicable regulatory process is completed, with the planned service expected to operate under the European Union’s Markets in the Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.

Deutsche Bank spokesperson Heinrich Frömsdorf said the bank expects to receive the relevant license in October. The move represents another significant step in the bank’s growing involvement in the digital asset sector.

Gerald Podobnik, Co-Head Corporate Bank at Deutsche Bank, said, “Digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it. We see them as new rails that can coexist with existing market infrastructures while benefiting from the trust, security and safeguards that regulated financial institutions provide. Our aim is to offer clients a secure and regulated gateway to this evolving market.”

Bitcoin, Ether and Stablecoins Set for Initial Support

At launch, Deutsche Bank plans to provide custody support for a selected group of digital assets. These include Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), USDC, EURC and EURAU.

The bank may expand the list of supported assets over time, depending on client demand, regulatory requirements, internal approvals, and risk management considerations. Tokenized financial instruments are also part of the bank’s longer-term roadmap.

The service will allow clients to safeguard their digital assets and transfer them to third parties. Deutsche Bank will manage the wallets and private keys on behalf of clients, reducing the need for institutions to develop and maintain their own custody infrastructure.

Security at the Center of the New Service

Deutsche Bank says its custody solution has been designed with multiple layers of security and operational controls. These include secure key generation, hardware-based protection, segregation of duties and multi-person approval procedures.

The system will also use separate warm and cold storage environments, redundant technical infrastructure, and controlled backup and recovery arrangements. Selected external technology and infrastructure providers will support specific parts of the service.

The initial target clients include corporates, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers and sovereign institutions connected to Deutsche Bank’s Corporate Bank and Investment Bank.

Deutsche Bank Joins Germany’s Expanding Crypto Banking Market

Deutsche Bank’s planned service follows its 2023 partnership with Taurus and earlier efforts to develop digital asset custody capabilities. Other German financial institutions have also entered the market, including Landesbank Baden-Württemberg and DZ Bank.

The expansion comes as European banks continue adapting to the implementation of MiCA. However, Deutsche Bank emphasizes that the planned service remains subject to regulatory and internal approvals, meaning its timing, geographic availability, and supported assets could change.

The central bank also emphasizes the risks associated with digital assets, including price volatility, fraud, cyber incidents, and failures of market participants. Crypto-assets are not protected by a deposit-guarantee scheme equivalent to the protection available for eligible traditional bank deposits.
