Coinbase Sharpens VARA-USD Precision with Seven-Decimal Upgrade

Coinbase has announced a major technical adjustment to its VARA-USD trading pair, increasing price precision from five to seven decimal places.

This change, effective June 24, 2026, allows traders to place orders at far more specific price points, reducing spreads and improving liquidity for the micro-cap VARA token.

What is VARA-USD?

VARA-USD is the trading pair between the U.S. dollar and VARA, the native token of the Vara Network.

Built on the Gear Protocol, Vara focuses on decentralized application development and has been steadily gaining traction in 2026.

Despite its relatively small market capitalization of around $3.1 million and modest daily trading volumes, VARA has secured listings on major exchanges including Coinbase, Gate.io, and Crypto.com.

Coinbase’s New Move and Its Impact

Coinbase’s decision to tighten quote increments from 0.00001 to 0.0000001 is significant for a token priced at roughly $0.00052.

Previously, the smallest possible price movement represented nearly a 2% change, which made trading inefficient and volatile. With the new increment, the minimum tick size shrinks to about 0.02%, enabling traders to execute orders with much finer precision.

This infrastructure upgrade improves order book granularity, reduces slippage, and enhances the overall trading experience.

Other exchanges listing VARA, such as Gate.io and Crypto.com, may feel pressure to adopt similar precision standards. If they continue using wider increments, their order books could appear less competitive compared to Coinbase’s.

This could drive liquidity toward Coinbase, reinforcing its role as a leading venue for VARA trading. Over time, the move may set a precedent for how micro-cap tokens are handled across the industry, especially those trading at sub-penny levels.

Price Points Change as a Trend

Coinbase’s move to increase decimal precision for VARA-USD is not unique. Exchanges regularly adjust tick sizes, or the minimum price increments allowed in order books, to improve liquidity and trading efficiency.

In March 2025, Binance announced tick size updates for multiple spot trading pairs, including APE/USDT, APT/USDC, and CHZ/USDT, reducing increments from 0.001 to 0.0001 or even smaller. This allowed traders to place orders at more precise levels, narrowing spreads and improving execution quality.

Later in December 2025, Binance again refined tick sizes for pairs such as INJ/BTC, TIA/USDT, and WLD/USDC, cutting increments by factors of ten. For example, INJ/BTC’s tick size was reduced from 0.0000001 to 0.00000001, enabling more granular trading in a volatile market.

Value of Specific Price Points

For traders, the benefits are clear:

  • Tighter spreads: More granular pricing narrows the gap between bids and asks, reducing transaction costs.
  • Better risk management: Traders can enter or exit positions at more precise levels, improving strategy execution.
  • Enhanced liquidity: Even with low trading volumes, finer increments encourage more active participation, as traders feel confident, they can transact closer to their desired price.

This adjustment doesn’t change VARA’s fundamentals—it remains a micro-cap token with limited volume—but it does make trading more efficient and accessible.

Coinbase’s precision upgrade for VARA-USD is a small but impactful step in refining crypto market infrastructure. By allowing orders at more specific price points, the exchange is improving liquidity and reducing costs for traders of a micro-cap token.

For VARA, this could mean greater visibility and competitiveness, while for the broader market, it sets a standard for how exchanges can support low-priced assets.

As crypto matures, such technical refinements may prove just as important as regulatory milestones in shaping the trading landscape.
