Polymarket IPO and Token Issuance: Under Consideration

text

Polymarket, a prediction platform where one can place bets on the future outcome of events, is considering an Initial Public Offering in the near future.

Governing Body

The platform is regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC); however, the body announced, according to reports, an “interim final rule excluding casino-type gambling products and sports betting from the definition of swaps as financial derivatives and also proposed rules to include event contracts such as sports and politics handled in prediction markets within swaps.” Polymarket is also considering issuing tokens through its platform.

Funding Round

Currently, Polymarket is pursuing a funding round worth 21 billion U.S. dollars, which will increase the valuation of the company pre-IPO from recent estimates of 15-20 billion U.S. dollars. It has also hired ex-Goldman Sachs executives.

Legal Battle

On September 24, the New York State Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Polymarket for operating illegal gambling, and the platform has made counter suits, feeding into the legal battle with state authorities. This is not a federal charge; rather a state-level one. However, one must consider the gravitas of the New York State Attorney General’s influence on sanctioning and influencing policies, entities and individuals—there have been many cases that the rulings made their way up to the Supreme Court, where legal precedents have been made on the outcomes.

Mulling Over IPO and Token Issuances

That said, the Initial Public Offering and Token Issuances of Polymarket are currently in the status of being mulled over. They are not final, nor publicly announced yet. Polymarket CEO Shane Coplan appeared at the “Token 2049” conference held in Singapore on the 7th, hinting at the possibility of an announcement, and only stated that he truly believes in the concept of on-chain assets.
