Pocket Bitcoin Breaks Wallet Anonymity as Leaked Compliance Records Expose 291 Crypto Users

A leaked set of compliance records of Pocket Bitcoin has exposed the identities of 291 cryptocurrency users by directly linking their names to wallet activity, shattering one of the core assumptions of digital asset ownership: anonymity. 

The incident is a representation of the fragility of privacy in regulated environments and raises urgent questions about how compliance data is stored, shared, and protected. 

Disclosures of the Security Incident 

Pocket Bitcoin’s disclosure reveals that the leaked records originated from a compliance database maintained by a regulated crypto service provider. 

The files contained personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, addresses, and government IDs, matched against blockchain wallet activity. This linkage effectively stripped anonymity from hundreds of users, revealing transaction histories that were previously pseudonymous. 

The breach shows the tension between Know‑Your‑Customer (KYC) obligations and user privacy. While regulators require exchanges and custodians to collect detailed identity information to prevent money laundering and terrorist financing, the exposure of such data creates new risks.  

Once leaked, the information can be used to track individuals’ financial behavior across public blockchains. 

Crypto is Regulated but Still Decentralized 

The Pocket Bitcoin breach symbolizes the paradox of crypto regulation.
