Bitcoin’s price has been fluctuating over the past few days and weeks as certain externalities have influenced the trading behavior of investors of the asset. Among which are U.S. Treasury Bonds, the Oil Crisis, Consumer Price Index in the U.S., and inflation.

Interest Rates on the Rise

The rise in interest rates for U.S. Treasury Bonds has shifted some investor strategies into one that seeks safety, as it 10 and 30-year bonds recorded a high compared to previous months. This comes after the U.S. government sought more public investment due to increased spending—driven by the war in Iran, among others. With a lack of volatility for interest rates, and backed by the United States Treasury itself, treasury bonds offer a haven for investors looking to diversify their portfolio with safety nets.

Oil Crisis’ Uncertainty

The Oil Crisis, meanwhile, has marked a rise—and certain volatility—in brent crude oil prices. This has spooked investors making risky bets on the market; though Bitcoin is not pegged to oil prices, the market behavior has spread to the wider financial landscape. The war, which has been waged since February, has seen geopolitical tensions influencing policies and events that have given deep economic impacts to the whole market. Energy, institutional investments, and so on, have given rise to risk due to the blockage of the Strait of Hormuz, and its implications to the energy and oil sector—as well as logistics, cost of living, and wages.

Cost of Living Rising

This has trickled down to the consumer price index; the cost of living for the American, as well as those of other countries. With this, bond prices could as well go up in direct correlation with increased government spending to alleviate market pressure—posing a downward pressure to Bitcoin and other virtual assets.

Trading Behavior: Influenced by Uncertainty and Externalities

Trading behavior is the outcome of the externalities, rooted in volatility in the market as well as offerings of safe havens in return. The price of Bitcoin will thus fluctuate according to the real-time reactions of the broader financial landscape to the unpredictable developments that the Oil Crisis, cost of living, and Treasury Bond Yields pose.
