BNY Mellon, the world’s largest custodian, is introducing a digital transfer platform to operate fund transactions and manger share ownership. The new platform will process its existing services. The strategy shows a major advancement, with BNY managing roughly $59 trillion in assets and its transfer agency over $8.6 trillion across 7.6 million investor accounts.
Tokenized Fund Expansion
Transfer agents manage fund subscriptions, redemptions, and ownership records, which typically cover several parties, and split custody. BNY’s blockchain system plans to develop a shared ownership record, lessening duplication, speeding up settlements, and allowing 24/7 market operations.
BNY’s Carolyn Weinberg stated that the technology could advance financial market transactions by shifting fund activity records on chain. Meanwhile, Baillie Gifford noted the use of the digital transfer agent for the UK’s First entirely built on, regulated tokenized fund, handling around $262 billion in assets.
In addition, BlackRock and Dreyfus also projected to implement the service for the upcoming short-term investment and cash-management products.
Digital Platform Transformation
The platform underscores the increasing focus on tokenization. Asset managers view blockchain as a method to streamline the issuance, transfer, and settlement of fund shares while maintaining the existing investment framework.
BNY has collaborated with Goldman Sachs on a blockchain-related platform for demonstrating ownership of selected short-term investment. The new transfer agency platform expands this framework into BNY’s wider system. Although traditional networks remain to process blockchain solutions as firms evaluate security, regulation, and market implementation.
Furthermore, BNY integrates blockchain effectively with existing metrics for database, compliance, and record-keeping. The bank plans to maintain its ownership records than replacing traditional fund systems.
Advancement on BTC ETH and USDC
BNY has been advancing its Digital Assets in February 2021 to back multi-asset data and related systems.
BNY introduced Bitcoin and Ethereum data services in October 2022, as one of the first significant custodian banks to deliver support for both digital assets.
They also increased its digital asset capabilities in June 2026 by collaborating with Circle, backing USDC minting and burning. The strategy reinforced the bank’s role in stable coin settlement and reserve operations.
BNY reported a strategic partnership with Finstreet Limited and ADI Foundation to offer crypto data services in Abu Dhabi Global Market, increasing its regulated digital asset presence.
Overall, BNY’s blockchain transfer agency platform expands its digital asset moves into fund management than replacing existing traditional platforms. BNY is adding a new system to back tokenized funds and blockchain-linked ownership records.
